Awards

The IFSM has awarded the first John Cowley Medal at the International Microscopy Congress in 2006. In 2013, the IFSM Executive Committee has decided that three new awards will be generated, which will complement the John Cowley Medal and will provide sufficient coverage of different fields of microscopy. The four awardees will receive the award at the International Microscopy Congress following their selection.
The awards will be devoted to the following four areas/fields upon which the award definition will be based:

  1. Diffraction Physics and Microscopy
  2. New Developments in Optics and Instrumentation
  3. Applications in Physical Sciences
  4. Applications in Life Sciences

In the order of the fields listed above, the awards will be named after the following four internationally recognized pioneers in microscopy:

  1. John Cowley
  2. Vernon Cosslett
  3. Hatsujiro Hashimoto
  4. Eduard Kellenberger

The awards honour outstanding contributions of individual scientists and their achievements in the field of microscopy and related techniques. The award cannot be divided and for each award a single nominee has to be selected. The awards are presented in the framework of the IFSM symposium at the end of the International Microscopy Congress and each awardee is expected to deliver a plenary lecture.

The 2011 Wolf Prize for Physics

The 2011 Wolf Prize for Physics was awarded jointly to three pioneers in Aberration-Corrected Electron Microscopy:
Maximilian Haider, Harald Rose and Knut Urban for their development of aberration-corrected electron microscopy, allowing the observation of individual atoms with picometer precision, thus revolutionizing materials science.

Stefan Hell awarded the Nobel Prize

Eric Betzig, Stefan Hell and William Moerner have been awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for “Surpassing the limitations of the light microscope”.
